out of context by a section of the media in his criticism of the selection process of the recently recommended Appeal Court Justices. According to him, a member of the NBA National Executive Committee misrepresented his concerns on the appointment of the justices when he rushed to an online blog and published his own version of the statement and in the process, was quoted out of context.

ORTOM PETITIONS IGP OVER ASSASSINATION ATTEMPT, ADAMU ASSIGNS PROBE – PUNCH PG.2

The Benue State Governor, Samuel Ortom, on Wednesday formally presented to the Inspector-General of Police, Mohammed Adamu, a petition on Saturday’s assassination attempt on him. Newsmen learnt that the governor presented the petition to the police boss at an early morning meeting the two of them had in Abuja.

A Federal High Court in Abuja on Wednesday adjourned till May 25 the prosecution of a former Benue State Governor, Gabriel Suswam for the cross-examination of the fourth prosecution witness, Abubakar Umar. The Head, Media and Publicity, Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, Wilson Uwujaren, in a statement on Wednesday said Suswam was standing trial before Justice Ahmed Mohammed of the Federal High Court for alleged fraud.

The Senate has introduced a bill seeking to amend the Police Act, 2020.The new bill titled ‘The Nigeria Police Act 2020 (Amendment) Bill, 2021’ was sponsored by Senator Surajudeen Ajibola Basiru (APC, Osun). According to the sponsor, the bill seeks to enhance the operational capacity of the Nigeria Police Force (NPF) through the removal of constraints of funds and whittling down the over-centralisation of the command structure of the police force.

The bill which seeks to make provisions for six months timeframe within which a person is appointed as the acting Executive Chairman of Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) can occupy the office in an acting capacity, on Wednesday, scaled through Second Reading on the floor of the House of Representatives. The bill was sponsored by the former Chairman, House Committee on Capital Market and Other Institutions, Hon Tajudeen Yusuf, who also seeks to provide for the commission to retain a percentage of the loot recovered to fund their operations, and for other connected purposes.

Former Managing Director of an aviation fuelling company, Star Orient Nigeria Limited, Dare Osamo, a lawyer and one other were yesterday arraigned before a Lagos Magistrate’s Court sitting in Yaba over alleged theft of N1bn. The defendants, Osamo, Ayoola Olore Abisola, 30, and Hussaina Abdulkadir, 32 ,were docked before Magistrate Mrs A.A Oshiniyi on four-count- charge bordering on forgery and stealing by  Zone 2 Police  Command, Onikan.

Since ascending the throne of the Obosi Kingdom, Eze Chidubem Iweka III, the Igwe of Obosi, has experienced four assassination attempts. Given the proximity of Obosi to Onitsha, the commercial capital of Anambra State, robbers and drug addicts and peddlers have made Obosi a haven to carry out their nefarious activities. Policing Obosi, therefore, hasn’t been a dog’s breakfast. Besides, it is one of the most populated towns in Anambra State. Eze Chidubem Iweka III hasn’t left the job of policing to the police and other security operatives alone. Many times, he has taken to the battle to the territories of the miscreants, together with the Obosi vigilance group, telling them to either leave Obosi or risk the wrath of the law.

ORTOM PETITIONS IG ON ASSASSINATION ATTEMPT – THISDAY PG.10

Benue State Governor, Dr. Samuel Ortom, yesterday formally presented a petition to the Inspector-General of Police, Mr. Mohammed Adamu, over last Saturday’s attempt by gunmen, suspected to be herdsmen, to kill him. It is gathered that the IG has also ordered the Deputy Inspector-General of Police in charge of the Force Intelligence Bureau (FIB), Mr. Tijani Baba, to expedite action on the investigation.

NDLEA LISTS EIGHT COUNTRIES WITH VISA CLEARANCE REQUIREMENTS – THISDAY PG.12

The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, (NDLEA), has listed the eight countries, which require that it gives a mandatory visa clearance to those intending to travel to their countries. The countries are: Thailand, Malaysia, Indonesia, India, Brazil, Pakistan, Philippines and Russia.The NDLEA disclosed the name of the countries to debunk claims that it was introducing a levy to travellers, insisting that the requirement from the eight countries was not new but had been in existence for 24 years.

FG REJECTS TI’S RATING OF NIGERIA’S ANTI-CORRUPTION WAR – THISDAY PG.10

The recent poor rating of Nigeria in its anti-corruption campaign by the Transparency International (TI) received the attention of the federal government yesterday as it punctured the assessment, saying it was full of discrepancies, inaccurate data and indices. The National Contact to TI in Nigeria, the Civil Society Legislative Advocacy Centre (CISLAC), had on Tuesday, accused the present Nigerian government of not being transparent in its anti-corruption crusade and management of recovered assets.
